Description of this type of school/schooling method:
This gives students an opportunity to study in another country. This is on language and homestay programs.
Advantages:
This is a great alternative for the intellectually curious and talented as well as adventuresome student. It gives them an opportunity to gain a global view of the world while they are still in a family, not to speak of the language opportunity. Colleges and universities want students who have dared to do something different. This would give one a great advantage on admission and scholarships. 13th year programs are available in many of the countries. This is for students who may have graduated from HS, but feel they need a break before entering college.
Challenges:
The greatest challenge is to be able to adjust to another culture and language. Another challenge is to stretch oneself to become independent, foward thinking, practice tolerance and share outside one's own family, school and community.
Tuition/Costs:
$5,000/year or less
Other comments regarding tuition/costs:
These may vary on length of stay. Year long stays are recommended highly. Students get the most for their money here. Semester and summer stays are available for those who can not commit for longer.
Additional comments or suggestions:
Choose only reputable programs and be sure that they are accredited by CRISET. An example of this is the AFS Intercultural Programs. They have been hosting and sending students for over 50 years. They may be reached at 1-800-AFS-INFO,1-800-876-2377 and on the web at www.afs.org
