4 Star Alternative School Rating

Description of this type of school/schooling method:
Online-based Homeschool curriculum (also some virtual public charter schools in some states). Six subjects: Language Arts (including Phonics), Math, Science, History, Art, & Music.

Advantages:
Clear, concise objectives for every single lesson. Assessments for nearly all lessons to check mastery of objectives.

Many planning and progress tools for the parent. Excellent materials included. You can mix and match grade levels to get your child placed where they need to be in each subject. Outstanding content based on Core Knowledge Foundation (What Your __ Grader Needs to Know__, etc.) and very similar to classical education (ala The Well-Trained Mind). Wonderful use of technology. History studied chronologically. Art lessons are not only on methods, but also great artists and their work, and Art ties in with History. Phonics instruction is phenomenal. Literature, composition, spelling, writing, vocabulary, analogies, test preparation, and more in Language Arts program. Mastery based with spiral review Math with great emphasis on problem solving skills. Music based on Kodaly and Solfege methods. Science is in-depth and teaches students to think like a scientist. All courses extremely engaging.

Uses teaching methods for every style of learner: auditory, kinesthetic, visual, hands-on, etc.

Much online support from other families.

Challenges:
Can be time consuming if family is used to other less "meaty" curricula, or if all the optional activities are done.

Currently in 2004, only K-8th grades. High school courses coming in following years.

Cannot be re-used for multiple children at this time.

Tuition/Costs:
$2,500/year or less

Other comments regarding tuition/costs:
Complete course purchase available for all six courses K-5, and all five middle school courses (no music in M.S.). Core course purchase for any four different courses. Individual course pricing also available.

Scholarship plan (5-70% off)
Interest-free payment plan
Military plan

Additional printed materials available if desired. Alternative is to print PDF files for worksheets and assessments.

Purchase includes 18 months of online school access for core or complete purchases, or 12 months access for individual course purchases.
