Description:
A reading program, generally lasting several weeks, that encourages and rewards reading among students. May involve on-going rewards throughout the program, and may involve competition between classes or grades.

Duties:
Committee must think up and develop a theme for the program, decide upon criteria, incentive and rewards, and keep track of students progress throughout the program. Committee must also communicate to parents and teachers the plan of work and criteria for the program. Incentive and rewards may need to be bought or solicited from the business community.

Time needed:
May involve several meetings to develop a theme and work plan.

During the 2-3 weeks of the program, may be a fair amount of work to do at school, depending upon the details of the program.

Shopping or soliciting for incentives and rewards may take several hours.

Characteristics/skills needed:
Creativity--Ability to develop new and interesting ideas.
Dependability--Can be counted on to complete tasks.
Organization--Can make a logical order out of many competing interests.

Helpful tools:
Computer or typewriter

Copier

Lifespan of committee:
Usually 2-3 weeks.

Personal benefits:
A chance to use your creativity, to promote reading, and to work with school staff and students.

Involving the kids:
Depends upon the type of program being run. Kids can always help with record keeping and tallying.
