Overall behavior of breed:
Border Collies are a herding breed. They do tend to "nip" at the heels when they are pups- but can be trained not to. They are active dogs and require a lot of exercise with room to run. In the first 2-3 years of life, they tend to be in PUPPYHOOD, which makes them seem more active than usual (but they are active dogs) but they do calm down when they get older- still requiring running exercise. They are smart, easy to train, loyal, dogs. They aren't barkers and only bark to protect the house (at strangers walking by). They love attention and welcome play. My BC is sweet and gentle with my kids, ages 2, 7 & 10. He also gets along with my Australian Cattle Dog (pup still) who is on this list as well. The 2 dogs love each other and are good with the kids.
Explain why this breed was good/not good with your kids:
My Border Collie is gentle and friendly with my kids and their friends, as well as other dogs (including our Aust. Cattle Dog pup). The only thing I would say is not a good trait of this dog is that they don't like to be pulled by the collar to be moved. Otherwise this is a good breed of dog for kids.
Typical colors:
Black & white; some may have tan markings as well. There are long haired and short haired varieties.
Does this breed shed?
Yes
Special grooming needs:
Regular brushing - typical shedding during seasons fall & spring, with less shed in summer and winter.
Daily exercise requirements:
Active dog -- herding breed. Will herd the birds in the yard if necessary (smile).
