Overall behavior of breed:
As with any breed, much of the dog's behavior depends on the temperament of the parents and the environment in which it is raised. These dogs are loyal, protective, active members of their families. Not ideal for confined city life, they are great for active suburban or rural families. Don't get this dog if you plan to leave it alone in a small yard day after day.
Explain why this breed was good/not good with your kids:
I have 3 of these dogs and they are all wonderful with my children. They tend to be family dogs and are protective of what they see as belonging to them or their families and are not always tolerant of strangers. Great watchdogs and companions.
Typical colors:
These are not solid color dogs, instead they are a mixture of either black/white or red/white, often with tan accents.
Does this breed shed?
Yes
Special grooming needs:
Spring brushing to remove winter undercoat. Very low maintenence.
Daily exercise requirements:
These are active, inquisitive dogs, bred for work, so they do need daily exersize for both their bodies and their minds. They are very intelligent and take to obedience training well.
Other comments or suggestions
I don't recommend this dog to everyone, but, if you have an active lifestyle and want a loyal companion to accompany you and your children, it is a good choice. Be sure to buy from a reputable breeder and try to see both parents to guage their temperaments.
