Collies make great companions and family pets. They are commonly used as guide dogs for the blind and make great guard dogs. They are known for their sheep herding abilities, their kind and sensitive nature and are intelligent and loyal. They are not considered to be the slightest bit aggressive. They tend to be reserved with strangers, but not usually aggressive.

A collieÆs coat can be smooth or rough. The rough collie's coat needs to be brushed every day when shedding and several times a week or it will become severely matted. The smooth collie requires only an occasional brushing.

Collies donÆt require too much exercise, although it should be vigorous. A few brisk walks and some play time is usually sufficient.
