Golden retrievers have a good sense of smell and love land and water, making them good hunting dogs. A fenced-in yard is recommended because they do like to wander. They are typically thought of as one of the most friendly, trustworthy and gentle-natured dogs, making them great companions for children of all ages.

Golden retrievers are one of the best choices for a family with kids. There are few breeds as gentle or as devoted as the golden retriever.

Golden retrievers shed quite a bit and need to be brushed and combed on a regular basis at least a few times a week.

Goldens need lots of exercise and play time. A few long walks and time to play with other dogs is most enjoyed. Goldens are also very good at catching Frisbees and they love the water.
