4 Star Dog Breed Rating

Size range:
Extra Large: 40 inches and up; 65 pounds and up.

Kid-tolerance scale:
Excellent

Average lifespan:
15+

Overall behavior of breed:
Dating back almost three thousand years, and ranking among the oldest, purest breeds of dog, this is certainly not the breed to suit everyone, as they can be sometimes quite stubborn and aloof, almost cat-like in character, but once hooked, you will own a dog, which is like no other breed; an imposing dignified presence at your side. The close relationship of the Tibetan Mastiff with man throughout the centuries has given the dog a almost uncanny "human" understanding. Generations of working as a guardian of yak and sheep, requiring always a protector and not a killer, has produced a disposition and temperament of controlled strength, initiative, and fearlessness, tempered with patience, loyalty, and gentleness.

Explain why this breed was good/not good with your kids:
I have two males who are gentle with our grand-babies. The older one would break the ice when we were foster parents by licking newcomers to our home who were often timid and scared.

Typical colors:
Its double coat is long and found in a wide variety of colors from solid black, to black and tan, various shades of gold (light to dark) and occasionally the dilute gray and brown are also possible.

Does this breed shed?
Yes

Special grooming needs:
Daily brushing in the spring while blowing it's winter wool.

Daily exercise requirements:
It thrives in a spacious, fenced yard with a canine companion, but it is not an appropriate dog for apartment living. Loves taking walks in the evening.

Other comments or suggestions
The Tibetan Mastiff is known as "the defender of women and children" in its native land, and is reliable with children in a family home.
