4 Star Dog Breed Rating

Size range:
Extra Large: 40 inches and up; 65 pounds and up.

Kid-tolerance scale:
Excellent

Average lifespan:
12-14 years

Overall behavior of breed:
Very intelligent, highly loyal, loving companion. Strong protective and herding instincts yet at the same time has a kind, nurturing nature.

Explain why this breed was good/not good with your kids:
With good breeding and proper socializing at a young age this breed makes an excellent family dog. It's natural herding insticts make it a wonderful caretaker of young children and other family pets. Will protect a child from stray animals and ward off strangers. Will stand it's ground when sensing danger but does not attack unless it's appropriate. This breed would protect a child with it's life if necessary, yet is otherwise extremely friendly, gentle, affectionate and loving with people and other animals.

Typical colors:
Black, black tan and sable.

Does this breed shed?
Yes

Special grooming needs:
Long haired breed which does require at least one weekly brushing.

Daily exercise requirements:
Moderate to highly active depending on the dog. Loves to run and play, especially with it's people. A daily walk is much appreciated. Thrives when it feels it has a job to do.

Other comments or suggestions
This breed is very intelligent and highly trainable. They will try to herd a group of running children and since nipping at the heels is a natural herding behavior this has to be trained appropriately at a young age.
