4 Star Idea Rating

Cost:
Very Minimal!

Description:
Make small tags, notes, or computer labels that read "You are the Wind Beneath our Wings!

The tiny Token gift is a little airplane, made with: one stick of gum, a Roll of candy ( Smarties or SweetTarts minis, in cellophane, or a similar sized Tootsie Roll), two same-flavored Life Savers, and a rubber band. You may want small plastic bags for the finished item (zippered, or use curling ribbon to tie).

The rubber band I used measures 2" across, when flattened (that's half its circumference). You can go slightly smaller, but not much bigger.

Preparation:
All Hands Wash Hands, of course!

Pinch 2 Lifesavers together.

Insert a rubber band through the holes of both Lifesaver candies, leaving a loop at both ends.

Insert the stick of gum through one loop, and gently pull the opposite loop up and over the other side of the gum stick 'wing.'

Center the loops (about 1/2 inch apart) and center the 'wheels'.

Give a tug to the wheels, and insert a candy Roll between the gum and the wheels. That's the 'body' of the airplane.

Adjust the wheels a bit: gently pull one to the right, and one to the left side of the candy roll.

The candy roll can be gently shifted up or down a bit, so your "airplane" looks a bit like an antique airplane, a real Snoopy and the Red Baron type thang.

Put the little candy airplane into a plastic bag, to keep it clean and fresh.

Other comments or suggestions:
I bought a li'l airplane like this at a craft fair more than 10 years ago. My son was home with a cold today, and I put together a couple of Airplanes for amusement. He knew what they were without my telling him; he wanted add make tiny paper propellers, etc., to his own "fleet," but they look like Airplanes without adding more detail. He was flying his planes all around the living room. I've always thought of them as a cute party favor or token. In fact, I should send one to my Pilot father-in-law, just for giggles.

I like the peppermint Life Savers, for white wheels. They just look right to me. We had Big Red cinnamon gum around the house, and my son does not like cinnamon, so I guess he'll play with those airplanes quite a bit before his Sister swipes them... ;-)

Whether the wheels should be face out, or in ("Lifesavers" brand molded into the candy) is a matter of personal preference. ("You are the Wind Beneath my Wings, and a True Lifesaver")...???... As an adult, I sort of aim for Wheel Consistency either way, but I wouldn't push that compulsion on kids. Older children could crank these out faster than I can, fer shur...
