Other comments or suggestions:
Check the newspaper for concerts in the park. Pull your old guitar out of the closet. Oops...the teenagers are leaving the room...so pull out the popcorn popper, too ;-)
Our family found, almost by accident, that renting "The Sound of Music" was a way cool pre-4th of July movie to watch.
When the family sings "Edelweiss" at the music festival in Vienna, and the crowd joins them, with feeling, it's just awesome! The family must literally "Climb Every Mountain", leave riches behind...and the movie doesn't say so, but the Rest of the Story is, the von Trapp family ends up in Vermont, USA. There's at least one book on the subject, and stuff on the 'Net.
Another musical video that grabs deep at the heartstrings is "Les Miserables", which children 3rd grade and up can understand sufficiently for tie-ins with history books and other media. Liberty was (and is) hard-won by many nations.
"Do you hear the distant drums? It is the song of angry men, it is the song of angry people who will not be slaves again...when the beating of your heart, echoes the beating of the drum..."........ya gotta watch it! We watched this with Grandma one summer, and another summer at the beach cabin (where the forces of Nature stir the mind, too) and it was sooo perfect!
