Description:
Sweeten your patriotism with a cake of red, white, and blue!
Making a cake from scratch can be a very fun project for you and your child. Gather all ingredients ahead of time, have your child measure out the different portions and set aside. When you need something to be added to the recipe, you can request it from your child who can add and mix the ingredients.
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350¦.
2. Sift 3 1/2 cups of cake flour.
3. Add 4 teaspoons of baking powder and set aside.
4. Cream 1 cup of salted butter (butter needs to be very light).
5. Gradually add 2 cups of sugar lightly into the butter.
6. Add 1/3 of the dry mixed ingredients into butter.
7. Then mix in 1/3 cup of milk.
8. Stir batter until smooth.
9. Repeat this process until all parts are added and completely mixed.
10. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
11. Separate 8 eggs, put whites in one bowl, yolks in another.
12. Whip the egg whites with a hand mixer or whisk until stiff.
13. Fold into batter (with spatula gently mix the egg whites in).
14. Pour into greased pan.
15. Cut the batter with a spatula to release air bubbles.
16. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
17. When cake is cooled you can remove it from pan or serve as is.
18. To remove, take a butter knife and lightly run it around the edge of the pan.
19. Place equally sized plate on top of cake and flip over onto it.
20. Place platter on top of flipped cake and flip again.
21. Even out the cake to be balanced on the platter.
22. Whip 1 pint of heavy cream with a whisk.
23. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
24. Whip ingredients until cream stands up on its own.
25. Layer the whipped cream onto the cake leaving room for a square of blueberries.
26. Make a solid square (no whipped cream) filled with blueberries in upper left corner (make sure blueberries are very dry as they can bleed).
27. Core strawberry stems and cut in half.
28. Lay strawberries in rows as the stripes.
29. You may want a picture of a flag to help you place the 13 stripes.
30. Squeeze whipping cream through pastry bag (or zip-lock bag, snipped at the end) onto blueberries to make tiny stars.
31. Refrigerate until time to serve.
