3 Star Technique Rating

Appropriate age group:
Infant

Description of technique:
Although it seems as if breastfeeding should be instinctive to your baby, infants need help getting latched on correctly. Many women give up on breastfeeding because their nipples become sore -- improper latch-on being the most frequent culprit.
If you avoid injury to your nipples from the start, you will be more likely to continue breastfeeding. With this in mind, take advantage of the resources available to you.

Most hospitals have on-site lactation consultants who will spend time with you in your room to help you position the baby and offer nursing tips. Many hospitals also offer breastfeeding classes you can take before or after you give birth to your baby. Other organizations such as La Leche can also offer guidance. There are plenty of people who are available to answer your questions so don't be afraid to ask for help.
