3 Star Technique Rating

Appropriate age group:
Infant

Description of technique:
At first, your baby will nurse often --every two to three hours (or six to eight times every 24 hours). It's important to nurse whenever your baby is hungry. This will ensure that your body produces enough milk to satisfy your child and will help prevent your breasts from becoming engorged (when your breasts become swollen with milk). Some women supplement breastfeeding with formula for fear they won't have enough milk to feed their child. This actually interferes with your milk supply since your body produces milk based on how long and often your baby nurses. (The more your baby sucks, the more milk your body manufactures.) Studies show that only 5% of women can't produce enough milk, which could happen because of various medical reasons.

Be sure to start each feeding with alternate breasts, so that each side gets equal nursing time.
