Estimated time to complete gift:
Variable; it's art! Take your time!
Description of gift:
Dagwood and Blondie, Cookie and Alexander...they graced the comic strips for years. Dagwood's sandwiches were never quite the same way twice, always amazing in size and variety of fillings/condiments.
Typically he would bring his sandwich out to his favorite chair, nearly sit down, and before he could sit down, some sort of comic situation would interrupt his "snack." For sandwich ingredients, the phrase "everything but the kitchen sink" comes to mind, but please limit selections to what Dad would actually enjoy eating. No marshmallow creme plus anchovies, etc.
Materials:
Good Bread. We once used basic French Bread from the store, and it was both too tall, and too tooth-some. Ask the deli people for recommendations, if Big and Long is the direction you take. You can stack sliced bread like a tower; quit before it tumbles! ;-)
Cheeses, meats, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, olives, salt and pepper, other goodies.
Toothpicks; some whole olives skewered with toothpicks are rather classic Dagwood decor on top.
Extra wide foil or plastic wrap if the sandwich is not going to be served immediately.
Instructions:
If the sandwich will have to sit a spell (in fridge or ice chest) before presentation, put a thin layer of mayo or soft butter on each side of the interior of the bread, to prevent sogginess. If it's a Road Trippin' Feast, bag the sandwich(es) and keep them on Top of the ice chest.
Other suggestions or comments:
Tomatoes: slice them thin, and place between 2 paper towels to remove excess moisture. Lettuce: wash and pat/wrap with a clean dish towel. Meat and cheeses generally go on the bottom of the stack, followed by tomatoes, lettuce, and other veggie material. It you are building a Tower vs. Sub, keep the layers thin!
In good weather, a picnic might be perfect, in the backyard or on the patio, or at least Local. Dad may not want to drive 100 miles or more to enjoy his day. Abundant lemonade or iced tea, cookies, chips, and fruit would be good to pack along.
Anytime you make great art like a true Dagwood, you might want a picture or a videotape of the action.
