Activity set-up/instructions or description of technique:
We have made time at home with family, doing things that families do together a priority. We read by the hour, watch only selected T.V. shows and videos, and play board games together. We buy used books at second hand shops, yard sales and public library book sales. We encourage hand me downs. Anything we can do to get plenty of books, in a wide variety of themes. We love to have books through out the house, and if they are cheap, we tend not to worry so much about how they are handled, so long as the kids handle them. Our kids are reading 6 grade levels ahead, in just 1st and 2nd grade! Our kindergardener is the best reader in her grade level, while being autistic. Our preschooler is reading beginning reader books! We keep our schedules as unstructured as possible to allow our kids plenty of time to get into pajamas and read before bed every night. We talk about letters, what words start with what letter, and the sound letters make. We have ABC puzzles and games. We don't encourage team sports and outside activities that take our family away from home on a frequent basis. Reading is the best foundation for our childrens' futures.
