Estimated time to complete activity or implement technique: lifelong skills
Materials needed (if applicable):
Books and your time
Activity set-up/instructions or description of technique:
From 2 months of age and beyond, read to your child. Stop after every sentence and repeat the key words in the sentence until your child is old enough to fill in the spaces for you. For example:
"The bear ate many blueberries."
Repeat the sentence as," The bear ate many_______?"
When your child begins to fill in the blank for you, show him/her the word in the book.
Other suggestions or comments:
Continue to do this with all books...new and old...until your child can read certain words. Then, have your child read books to you. Even if they are unable to read all of the words... you will be filling in the blanks for them. For example, " Cynthia crossed the street after looking both ways." You will likely fill in "Cynthia" and possibly "both".
Our daughter began reading at age 3 with this method and is 12 years old now. She was tested at an 11.1 grade level in reading comp.
