Appropriate grades or age groups:

Elementary School

Estimated time to complete activity or implement technique:
2 minutes or less-as long as your baby will listen!

Materials needed (if applicable):
Hard covered book with big pictures and a short story are great to read to an infant.

Activity set-up/instructions or description of technique:
After having three boys, 7, 5, and 14 months, I have found that the best way to raise a reader is to read to your children at the earliest age possible! A six week old can see contrasts in books and loves to be held, two important indicators that he/she is ready to be read to.

Other suggestions or comments:
My husband and I have read to our children since they were a few weeks old. We love the snuggle time with our boys and they love the stimulation. It is a win/win situation to read to a child you love! Last fall, our six year old first grader was tested at as reading at a third grade, second month level (3.2). He loves books and learning. His two younger brothers are doing the same. We have found that reading to our kids is the best way to raise a reader! It's a great investment!
