Appropriate grades or age groups:

Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond

Estimated time to complete activity or implement technique:
as long as they like

Materials needed (if applicable):
books

Activity set-up/instructions or description of technique:
I ask my son to read to his little sister whenever they need to do something quiet together (such as when I am working). He feels proud and she sees that reading is fun and "cool". She wants to read to him too! It is a great way to bond them together and to teach them how to get along.

Other suggestions or comments:
Keep lots of books around and let the children see mom and dad reading as a hobby. Visit book shops and libraries as often as possible. Let them choose books to bring home so that they can feel confident in their decision making. Children will feel comfotable with books if you make them an easy and natural part of life.
