Activity set-up/instructions or description of technique:
Find a worthy cause that interests your child. When I was young we used to get a kick out of raising money for MDA and then going to the local telethon location and dropping our money in the fish bowl. Once you've found a cause that interests your child or children, set up pledge sheets (cents per book read or cents per page read) and have each child set a goal for what they plan to read. Set a time period for when the reading will be accomplished. Then have the children collect pledges from friends and neighbors. Once the allotted time period is over, children can collect the money and turn it in to the "cause" themselves.

Other suggestions or comments:
Make sure you pick a cause that interests your child and make sure your child shares in the satisfaction of turning in the money. If applicable, a field trip to see how their money is used will also be meaningful (for example, if the donation is going to the local Humane Society, a visit to the Society and a tour will help the child see how the money they raised is appreciated.)
