Appropriate grades or age groups:
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School

Estimated time to complete activity or implement technique:
As long as it takes to read a children's book

Materials needed (if applicable):
One children's book

Activity set-up/instructions or description of technique:
When reading to children, charge "admission" to each page.

Explain that they have to read one word on each page before you will read the entire page.

In no time children are scanning text - looking for a word they can sound out - with the same enthusiasm with which they scan the illustrations.

Other suggestions or comments:
As your child improves you can charge a larger admission price! But don't take this too far. If the flow of the story gets lost, your child will stop enjoying this.
