Appropriate grades or age groups:
Preschool and Younger

Estimated time to complete activity or implement technique:
2 hours

Materials needed (if applicable):
black markers, plain white paper, ruler, compass, tape or poster gum, your child's five favorite books

Activity set-up/instructions or description of technique:
Choose ten simple words from your child's five favorite books. Use the paper, markers, and drafting tools to draw out magnifying glasses (you may choose to draw it once, then photocopy it). Inside each magnifying glass, write out each word you chose. Use tape or poster gum to place the I Spy Words in various places around the house (doors, in the kitchen, by the toothbrushes, etc.). Then, every time you sit down to read one of the books you chose, encourage your child to pick out the words they 'spied' and say where they found them. Have them show you where the words are every once in a while. Periodically, change the words you have posted for the hunt.
