Description of Easter celebration or activity:
Holiday times can be hectic. It's important to stop n' smell the roses, catch your breath, hug your kids. A little Couch Time with a shared bowl of popcorn can unfrazzle the mind. And no one is ever too old for a soothing bedtime story.
Setting up and preparing for this celebration or activity:
Look over your bookshelves, library selections, TV listings, or cruise the video rental store and bookstore for all form of media relevant to the season.
Our family favors "The Ten Commandments." My daughter has liked that movie since she was in 3rd grade. The despair of the life of the Hebrews in Egypt and in the desert definitely paves the way for the expected coming of a King. The VHS version is good; DVD has added richness of detail and Color that make you feel you are There!
If "Rugrats in Paris" wasn't your cup o' tea, try The Rugrats Passover special. Way shorter, and an Excellent vid for all ages! Of all episodes I have seen, this is one I think is even more engaging for adults than for children.
"Godspell" is a musical that weaves music into the story of Christ's life. It is placed in a contemporary setting (well, the Flower Power era, but a modern city). The songs are the most powerful element, ranging from soft and despairing to energizing. Someone else mentioned "Jesus Christ Superstar," but it has been so long since I have viewed that; I can't truly remember what I thought of it.
"Jesus of Nazareth" has quite an impact, in both book and video. Olivia Hussey is a most believable Mary, and so Young that youth can't help but relate to her situation.
Of course there are stories, videos, and books of All Sorts (including editions/adaptations of the Bible and New Testaments) designed to appeal to all ages, some with great pictures, available at bookstores.
