Description of technique for dealing with temper tantrums:
Children need preparation of expectations before approaching new territory. In any circumstance, an explanation should be offered as to what appropriate behavior will be and what the results will be of negative or positive behaviors. For example: "When we go into the store, you may walk beside the cart. However, if you leave my sight, you will have to ride in the cart." Then keep your word. If they get out of your sight, into the cart they go.

"When we go to Grandma's, if you get too wild, we will have a talk in the car until you get yourself under control. If you listen to us, you will have a great time with your cousins."

"When we get to the checkout, there will be things you want, but Mom will buy some sweets to have at home. Do not ask for anything at that time and when we get home, you can have some."
