Other suggestions or comments:
I find that if I give my 3 year old a "head's up" of what to expect beforehand, he fares much better during that time and when it's time to go. For example, when running errands I try to tell him; where we are going, what we are going to do there, how long we'll stay, how I expect him to act, what will happen if he misbehaves and/or what will happen when he does well, what will happen when we get home, etc. I find that he does much better because he has some sense of control over knowing what is going to happen.
