Appropriate grades or age groups:
Elementary School

Estimated time to complete activity or implement technique:
Flexible - for a warm-up activity or full classroom period

Materials needed (if applicable):
open areas

Activity instructions or description of technique:
2-3 children stand in the middle of an open area while the rest of the group is at one far side. Children in the middle will call, "Red Rover, Red Rover....," choose a characteristic (ex. hair color, clothing, gender, etc.), then they will call the children with that characteristic over in any way they choose. An example would be "Red Rover, Red Rover, anyone with blue eyes hop over." Those children with blue eyes will do exactly that and as they do, the children in the middle try to catch them. If they are caught they are NOT out, they become helpers to catch the remaining children.

Other suggestions or comments:
Promotes gross motor development, concept of colors, number.
