Project instructions or description of technique:
Playing store is great way to strengthen kids' addition, subtraction and multiplication skills.

1. Save your cereal and soap boxes, soup cans, egg cartons, soda bottles, magazines etc.

2. With a permanent marker, you and your child can put prices on your "groceries."

3. Once all of your groceries are priced, you'll be ready to play.

4. You will be the customer and your child will be the check-out person.

5. Place the groceries onto the counter.

6. Your child will write down the cost of each item on a piece of paper.

7. Once each item has been "scanned" allow your child time to add up your bill.

8. This bill will become your receipt.

9. Extend the play by asking your child questions. For example: "How much would three cartons of eggs be? How much is one carton of milk if the cost is two for $5.00? How much is my bill if I don? buy the cereal? Could you add this magazine to my bill?"

10. Check to see if your child? calculations are correct.

11. Remember to be a polite customer and give your clerk time to create your receipt!

12. Next time you go to the store, have your child add up the items on the reciept to see if it's correct.
