Project instructions or description of technique:
One sure way to get your kids excited about something is to get their friends excited about it too! Make your house a special place for your kids and their friends to come to discover the wonder of books and have fun!

1. Suggest that your child and some close friends begin a book club.

2. Make your house the meeting place where once a week, the club can meet to discuss the book that they have all chosen to read. Be sure to have some munchies around for the kids.

3. Be a monitor for the meetings. In the beginning, set out a list of questions for each member to fill out as they read the story (i.e., who is the main character? what is happening in the story? what do you predict will happen?).

4. Have the children write out answers to the questions as they read the book and bring their answers to the meetings.

5. Decide how many chapters the group will read each week.

6. Create a reasonable timeline to finish reading the book so no one feels overwhelmed or anxious.

7. Have each child write a small report on the book when they are finished reading it and share their thoughts with the group.

8. Encourage stimulating discussions at your gatherings. Where there strange characters in the book? Have the kids report about where they are in the book -- are they enjoying what they are reading? What do they think of the author?

9. By discussing what your child is reading, you will have a better understanding of how well he or she comprehends the book.

10. Make special trips with the group to local book stores to decide what book to read next.

11. Take the group to local book reading and signings and have them meet real live authors! When reading is seen as a social occasion, you'll be surprised how much more your kids will enjoy it.
