Appropriate grades or age groups:

Estimated time to complete project or implement technique:
15 minutes to many hours of fun.

Project instructions or description of technique:
Time spent traveling in the car is a great time to play word games with your kids. So why not pass the time strengthening your kids' language and reading skills while on the road?

1. Make a game out of finding words while driving in the car by searching out road signs and advertisements.

2. Search for words starting with a specific letter (i.e., look for words starting with the letter "A"). If it? a long drive you can go through many letters in the alphabet.

3. Play guessing games (i.e., "I'm thinking of a word that starts with the letter "C". Your child asks if the word is a person, place or thing, and you can answer only "yes" or "no"). Through reasoning and asking the right questions (i.e., "is this thing alive? is this thing big?"), your child will eventually guess what the word is.

4. Have your kids search for license plates that begin with every letter of the alphabet. The games you can make up and play are virtually endless!
