Spend quality time with your child, cuddled up reading a book together. Kids will associate reading-time with happy and peaceful time.1. Be attentive to which subjects your child is interested in and find books that will be exciting for him or her to read.
2. Take turns reading with your child -- have your child read a page, then you read a page.
3. Don? rush through the pages. Stop often and ask questions, making sure your child understands what is being read (i.e., Who is their favorite character? What is happening to the character in this story?).
4. Spend time sounding out words and site examples of other words that have similar phonetic sounds such as: through, shoe, new, blue, who, etc.
5. Make sure that the books you choose are not too advanced for your child's reading level. Start simple and advance with your child? capabilities.
6. Have a dictionary close by to look up new words that your child doesn? know.
7. Keep a word journal collecting new words to review and memorize.
8. Remember that this special time should not feel like a chore for either of you. If it does, stop and read together at another time!
9. Create a space that is quiet and comfortable. It should not feel pressured or harried.
10. Be careful not to test your child? knowledge. Instead, encourage him or her to go at thier own pace and make reading-time together a fun and pleasurable experience!
