Appropriate grades or age groups:
K thru 12

Estimated time to complete project:
10 minutes every day

Materials needed (if applicable):
Marker (large nib) color = black
8 1/2" x 11" white copy paper
1/4" thick old newpaper pad
12" x 16" card cut from grocery box

Project instructions or description:
PRE-LESSON:
French fold copy paper (like greeting card fold to make (4) sections. From memory draw:
In section (1) Human figure
(2) Tree
(3) Building
(4) Vehicle (on wheels)
Place your name and date on the sheet before filing it for future reference.

EXERCISES:
Draw what you see, not what you remember.
Sit in front of a human subject and start drawing from the head on down, drawing with a single line, never picking up the marker until the drawing is completed. This is called "contour drawing". It is one way to learn to draw a single line without scratching. Exercise for 10 minutes every day on the same subject for one week.
Do the same with objects 2, 3, and 4.
Then compare your first drawings with your exercises. If there is little improvement, that is because you are not drawing what you see, but what you think it looks like. Try again, and again.

Other suggestions or comments:
Any technique, whether it be learning to throw a ball, dance, or play an instrument, takes a lot of practice in order to succeed. The same goes for learning to draw, paint, and construct. See: http://www.sierratel.com/robprod/artorgan.htm
