2 Star Idea Rating

Appropriate grades or age groups:
Pre-K and up.

Estimated time to complete project:
2 hours.

Materials needed (if applicable):
Observing acting as an art form is a great way to expose kids to the dramatic arts.

1. Take your child to the movies and to local theatrical performances to introduce him or her to these artistic mediums.

2. Discuss and compare the differences between a film and a live performance. Does your child have a preference? Why?

3. Try to relate the themes of the movie or play to your child's own experiences and to his or her world.

4. Can your child decipher what is real and what is fantasy? Ask your child if he or she can think of alternative endings for the movie or play to spark their creativity.

5. If your child is fascinated with acting, set or costume design, encourage him or her to create a play or movie with a video camera.

6. Help your child to identify and gather the resources needed for the production. Based on available space and materials, your child can make his or her production simple or elaborate. The idea is to encourage your child's artistic vision.

7. If your child has a real knack for this creative art form, encourage him or her to take acting lessons, join a kids' theater group or take sewing or classes in set design!
