4 Star Idea Rating

Appropriate age group(s) or grade(s):
Pre-K and up.

Estimated time to complete activity (if applicable):
At least one hour.

Materials needed (if applicable):
mixing bowl
measuring cup
measuring spoons
spoon
ingredients

Instructions or description of technique:
1. Baking is a great way to do mathematics since you need to combine ingredients in a certain order with a specific portion needed.

2. The directions call for x amount of ingredients. Have your child collect everything needed. How many items are there?

3. When the directions tell you to add the first four ingredients together, you need to sort and add those items.

4. You need to figure out problems like how many tablespoons of butter = 1/4 cup?

5. What happens when you double the recipe: 2 x 2/3 cup is? How many teaspoons in a tablespoon?

6. You can extend this concept by introducing how many ounces make a cup, how many cups in a pint, pints in a quart, quarts in a gallon, and ounces in a gallon.

7. Have fun eating your results!
