Just go for it!

Project instructions or description of technique:
Go to the library to read up on butterfly and/or hummingbird habitat. Combine this with research of what plants thrive in your particular climate zone. Think of how you can add some of these favorite butterfly or hummer plants to your yard, so they will visit! Make a list that is Realistic, and go shopping for plants, seeds, soil amendments, etc. Install all that, and see what happens!

Other suggestions or comments:
Keep allergies in mind, including bee/wasp stings. (Some of the same plants that attract butterflies may attract bees and wasps). If you have access to experienced Master Gardeners in your community, consult them, too!
