Appropriate grades or age groups:
K-8

Estimated time to complete project or implement technique:
1 hour

Materials needed (if applicable):
quartz crystal
Mason jar
mirror
flashlight
and water

Project instructions or description of technique:
1) Be sure your child likes crystals -- most kids do!

2) Go to a children? store or gem shop that sells quartz crystals attached to a string or wire and buy one.

3) Take the crystal home and hang it in the window.

4) Observe what happens at different times of the day as light shines through it.

5) Your room will be filled with rainbows.

6) This can lead to a discussion of "What is a rainbow?"

7) Try steps 8-16 to help explain what is happening.

8) Take your Mason jar and fill it with water.

9) Place a pocket mirror inside the jar.

10) Bring the jar into a pitch black room with white walls.

11) Turn on a flashlight and angle the light onto the mirror.

12) Rainbows will cover the wall!

13) Have a discussion on how the mirror reflects light passing through the water traveling at an angle.

14) The water bends/refracts the light.

15) Bent light separates into the colors of a rainbow.

16) What are those colors?
