Estimated time to complete project or implement technique:
1 hour for project, days of observation

Materials needed (if applicable):
pinecone
peanut butter
birdseed
packaging string
logbook and pencil

Project instructions or description of technique:
1) This project is so simple and gives weeks of pleasure (once the seeds are gone, you can refill).

2) Take your pinecone and smear it with peanut butter.

3) Roll pinecone in seeds.

4) Attach a piece of packaging string to it? base.

5) Hang in a tree near your window.

6) Observe, record your results.

8) Can you learn the bird calls?

9) If your child shows a real interest, research local bird types and their habitats.

10) Make more refined bird feeders.

11) Check out your library and wildlife centers for instructions. They will supply you with valuable information as to the correct materials needed for specific bird types; e.g., where to place your bird feeders in your yard, avoiding windy spots, etc.

13) Have months of fun observing, take notes in your logbook.
