Appropriate grades or age groups:
Kindergarten and up.

Estimated time to complete project or implement technique:
1 to many days gathering plant life, 2 hours building terrarium

Materials needed (if applicable):
2-liter soda bottle with black plastic base
scissors
plants
potting soil
charcoal for houseplants

Project instructions or description of technique:
1) Inspired by how things grow in the tropics, you can create a mini tropical garden in your house.

2) Whether you live in the tropics, just had a vacation there, or maybe your child is studying the rainforest, this is an easy and fun project.

3) Research what kinds of plants grow in a tropical environment.

4) Visit a hothouse or local garden shop for ideas and information.

5) Bring home plants, clippings, etc. to plant.

6) Take your plastic bottle and remove all labels and clean it, leaving a clear surface.

7) Remove the black plastic base from the bottom of the soda bottle, this becomes the bottom of your terrarium.

8) Cut 4-5 inches off the top off your bottle. Turning it upside down, it will fit into the base creating your dome.

9) Fill your plastic base with about an inch of crushed charcoal.

10) Fill base with potting soil, leaving an inch at the top.

11) Plant your garden and water.

12) Soil should be moist, not soggy.

13) Cover with clear plastic dome.

14) Set your garden in a sunny spot and watch it grow.

15) Water regularly.

16) Make observations of what is happening inside!
