Age group(s) for which this strategy is helpful:
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond

Instructions for using this strategy:
Your child has tried her best to complete her homework but just can? do it. Write a note to the teacher explaining how hard your child has worked on the incomplete assignment, why she is having a difficult time with it (e.g., she doesn't understand the math concept), and how much time she spent on it.

Some children, especially as they get older, do not want you to write a note. In this case, teach your child how to approach the teacher and explain her difficulties. You may want to rehearse what words your child will use. Or, role-play the situation: Pretend you're the student and your child is the teacher, then reverse roles.

Other information parents should consider:
This should be set up in advance with the teacher.
