Description of discipline technique:
Teach your children that when they want your attention while you are talking to someone else, they should put their hand on your shoulder and wait quietly for you to acknowledge them. This takes time to become routine, but it works fabulously, because they know they will have your full attention. A younger child can come and squeeze your hand, or other signal you choose together.
Appropriate age group(s):
3 and up.
Other suggestions or comments:
When you are very busy and cannot get to them immediately, put your hand over theirs, to indicate you know they are there but must wait a few moments. You might even use a signal to indicate that they need to come back in a few minutes. But most of the time, you should find a break in the conversation ASAP, so that they know you care about their needs. Also, make sure you look into their eyes when they speak.
