4 Star Technique Rating

Description of discipline technique:
Many of you said something similiar, but underestimate how effective this actually is. I have worked in early childhood education for many years, and it is my single most used discipline technique. It works for children six months to the teenage years. When a child has something you don't want them to have, is hurting another child, or it is just plain unacceptable behavior, you explain why you don't tolerate it, and interest them in something else.

Appropriate age group(s):
Infants to Teenagers

Other suggestions or comments:
Sometimes it requires handing them a toy, or planning another activity. Simply ask the child to walk away, and then introduce something else. Explain to them why their behavior is inappropriate. Tell them you have a solution, or let them find a solution. Make sure the child knows what they were doing previously was a "poor choice", not that they are a bad child. Introduce "great choices".
