4 Star Technique Rating

Description of discipline technique:
I have a three year old and a two year old. We use a special counting technique to avoid constant arguing over who plays with what. While one child plays with the desired toy, the other counts up to ten or to twenty (with my help).
Then, "It's my turn." They must wait for their sibling to give them the toy, rather than taking it.

We use a similar technique when it is time to finish a fun activity such as playing in the park. After Mommy counts to a hundred, it's time to go. Sometimes, I give my three year old a choice, "Do you want me to count to thirty or to a hundred before we leave?"

In addition to teaching the children discipline, these techniques also teach them number sense.

Appropriate age group(s):
6 months and up

Other suggestions or comments:
Egg timers work well with this age group, as with older children.
