Description of discipline technique:
When my 11 year old son was continuously lying (not tall tale lies but "I didn't do it" lies), it had taken its toll on our family in whole. We had tried many different techniques and he continued lying. His father and I finally came up with him writing an essay. He was instructed to write 1,000 words on lying. He had to write why it is bad, why it hurts the family, what it does to his credibilty, where it places him in society, etc. We revoked all his fun time...TV, Nintendo, friend play, etc. until the essay was done. It took him a month. Now, two months later, the lying is down 90%. After having to write and then read his essay to his family, he said it made him realize how lies hurt others but mostly himself. It was a character builder.
Appropriate age group(s):
10 and up
Other suggestions or comments:
Be firm in child sticking to the essay. Cradle their hearts in love while you put forth a punishment. That way it is shown to the child that they will learn from punishment, not have to fear it.
