Description of discipline technique:
I have three boys who were constantly arguing over who got to ride in the front seat, who was going to get in the bath first, who's turn is it to feed the cat, etc. To put an end to this, I instituted the "Kid of the Day". The "Kid of the Day" gets to enjoy the little perks on his/her day: he gets to choose what's for dinner, ride in the front seat, check the mail...you get the point. But the "Kid of the Day" also is responsible for those little daily "chores" that are always an issue: getting in the bath first, taking out trash, etc. This has worked wonders in our home. The key is to (#1) include all of those things that bring on the "it's my turn argument" and (#2) balance priviledges with responsibilities.
Appropriate age group(s):
Pre-school, elementary, middle school
Other suggestions or comments:
Because we have 3 children, they each were "Kid of the Day" for 2 days per week and we used Sunday as a bonus day for exceptional behavior. Also, if you already have specific chores assigned, you can modify this plan simply by designating the "Kid" as Mom and Dad's helper of the day. This also works well for kids who are farther apart in age, as you can chose simpler tasks for your younger children.
