4 Star Idea Rating

Estimated time to make this valentine:
depends on how many R made

Appropriate age group(s):
Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond

Materials:
The candy known as 'Kisses' and the candy known as 'Hugs'

Red nylon netting

White curling ribbon

A salad-plate

Scissors

Optional: personalization, rather like strips of paper in fortune cookies. Just write "from _____" and insert the strip of paper into the bundles. Or, use a hole punch on small valentines, and tie the cards on to the bundles with the ribbon.

I forgot to put my son's name on (or in) these, and may just resort to Stickers, stuck on the bottom of the bundles.

Plastic Bag or container (to keep the candy bundles Fresh and sanitary until they can be distributed).

Instructions:
Basic principle is: use the salad plate as a 'pattern' for cutting circles of netting.

If you cut circles one by one, you'll lose your mind, so...fold the netting, and cut several at a clip. They don't have to be perfect, either...

Place 3 hugs and 3 kisses in the center of a Circle of netting, gather up the edges of the netting, and tie the li'l bundles closed with approx. 2 feet of curling ribbon. Tie into a basic little Bow, and curl the ribbon on each side. (Kid's scissors w/rounded ends are the safest for this---and handy to carry about!)

Other comments or suggestions to consider:
Nylon netting is usually neatly folded to begin with, so if your supply is fresh from the fabric store, vs. scrunched up, it'll be easy to work with.

Nylon tulle is also available in pre-cut circles, because of the popularity of wrapping li'l bundles for weddings: candy (Jordan almonds are popular) rice or birdseed, etc. It's a timesaver, and there's no scrappy mess to pick up. Look for it in craft shops. Color choice may be limited, and expect to pay more for the convenience.

Nylon net ranges from about 79 cents a yard regular to 3 or 4 yards for a dollar, on sale. The piece I had in my sewing room stash was perhaps a yard and a half, and I am not sure about its width; likely, the narrowest/cheapest sold in fabric stores.

Colorful fabrics can also be used. In that event, cut the circles with pinking shears.

I made 26 of these Hugs n' Kisses bundles in about an hour and a half, and most of that time was spent watching cartoons with my son. I like to do the cutting part in the kitchen, though, because I don't like dealing w/net scraps in carpet.

I used one 13 oz. bag of Hugs, and one 13 oz. bag of Kisses.

Kids can help with this. Their age will determine how much help they can be, or how long they will want to stick to the job.

These turn out very Pretty, and can be modified for Any holiday.

Kids tend to get Way more goodies at Valentine's day parties than they can eat. I have cleaned Unidentifiable and Sticky Party Gunk from my daughter and son's backpacks over the years, knowing some mom or dad had cared enough to bring something nice, and it got thrashed in Holiday excess. Well, I can be taught; I shifted toward "Enjoy it Later" treats.

Sugarless bubble gum (full pack, out of multi-packs) is my favorite tie-on to Valentine cards. But we have done that for so many years, I wanted to try something different.

Someone had a similar item submitted someplace else...and I looked, so I could credit that, but failed to find it. It was an item sent in by a father, who said his teen or 'tween-aged daughter liked to make little candy bundles as affordable Christmas gifts for her friends.

It doesn't take an excess of time or money for an "I love you." Truly special people in our lives should get an unlimited supply of Real hugs n'kisses, along with their sweet treat.
