Homemade Valentines

Heart-shaped Pillow or Sachet

2 hours.

Elementary School
Middle School

Materials:
durable fabric (e.g., velvet, heavy cotton, linen, canvas) that is 12?x14? (for a pillow) or 7?x9? (for a sachet)
thread
needles
straight pins
scissors
pencil
measuring tape
potpourri

Instructions:
1. Fold the fabric piece in half and draw your heart.
2. Fold the fabric once more cutting out a triangle from the center.
3. Unfold this fold to display the center of your heart.
4. Follow along your tracing up toward the folded fabric without cutting it.
5. You may have to make a few little snips to round off the edges.
6. Open up the fabric and the hearts will still be attached.
7. Pin the fabric together inside out.
8. Sew along the edges leaving the triangle center open.
9. Pull fabric through the hole turning it inside out.
10. Add soothing potpourri like lavender, sweet grass, sage.
11. Sew the hole up.

Other comments or suggestions to consider:
This project takes a steady hand. Have your child practice stitching on scrap fabric if sewing is new to them. Once they feel confident, proceed with the project. DonĘt be attached to the time, let your child work on it in small sittings.
