Description of technique:
Here's how you make your tambourine:

1) Get a long, narrow (2-3 inches wide) piece of cardboard about 30? long.

2) Shape into a circle, overlapping the ends, and staple together.

3) Take a newspaper and tear out small square pieces. Cover cardboard, inside and out, with wallpaper paste and cover completely with newspaper pieces. Make sure that newspaper pieces are lying flat and all surface areas of cardboard are covered inside and out.

4) Apply several more layers of paper, taking care that newspaper is pasted securely to cardboard, maintaining circle with edges tucked around. Allow to dry for several days.

5) When dry, make 4-6 pairs of holes in tambourine. Next, decorate with poster paints.

6) Put bells or several old keys or a few washers on string, and thread through holes made in tambourine. Tie knots on inside of tambourine to secure them.

7) For an extra drum-like effect, you can tightly attach a layer of plastic wrap to tambourine with an elastic!

For those of you who prefer a less labor-intensive tambourine effort, you can try this version. It? not as pretty or rugged, but it is quick to make.
