Description of technique:
Play different musical games. Have younger kids guess which note is higher or lower. Play several notes of a familiar piece with older kids and have them guess the song. Start off with four notes, then move to five. Have kids hum the notes back to you or sound them out themselves on a keyboard or piano (if you have one).

With older children, have them identify individual notes as they are played. Play games with musical flashcards. Start with identifying notes and make up your own games!
