Ingredients: (Hit your return key to start a new line)
2 c. Dark Brown sugar, firmly packed

1 c. butter, softened

1/2 c. buttermilk OR sour milk

4 c. rolled oats

2 c. flour

1/2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Thoroughly combine all ingredients, using a heavy-duty mixer, a big wooden spoon, or clean hands ;-)

Drop onto lightly greased baking sheets by rounded Tablespoon-ful.

Press 'em down a bit to flatten to about 1/4 inch thick.

Bake about 10-12 minutes, or until lightly browned. (Overbaking toughens the cookie considerably.)

Cool, and store in airtight container.

Other suggestions and comments:
These are not going to be ultra-soft, or spicy. (You can add a teaspoon of cinnamon if you like.)

This Ultra-Basic cookie reminds me soooo much of the flavor of plain granola bars, because the oats and brown sugar are dominant flavors.

This "got Milk?" type cookie shines in lunchboxes, or after school, harmonizing with whatever type of fruit you've chosen for that day. It's a sturdy cookie that won't fall apart easily in the cookie jar, and the shelf life is pretty good, too. A good cookie to pack along for car trips, camping, etc.
