Description of technique for limiting kids' TV-time:
Just like my nieces and nephews don't know what life was like before cable TV, my children will not know what life was like without a computer at their disposal. Even though I'm exchanging one screen for the other, I find that the time my daughter spends in front of the computer is a much more interactive and educational experience for her than watching her favorite cartoon-- and this is why. There are all kinds of games available for your computer, depending on system requirements and your child's age and skill level.

Today's software programs can help teach and reinforce reading skills, matching abilities, geography, science, math, typing etc., you name it. Some of the more recommended titles include brand-names such as Jump-Start, Living Books, Creative Wonders, Humongous, and Ventura. You, as the parent, can be selective on content and can monitor computer time much more closely. So if you have a choice, trade an hour of TV time for an hour of computer time. Your kid will still be sitting on his or her butt, but their brain will be doing a few more back flips.

Appropriate age group(s):
Preschool on up
