Description of technique for limiting kids' TV-time:
We have a rule that for each hour of "screen time" an hour of reading must be done first, either read to or reading alone. We discovered by turning off the TV, that our youngest just wanted to play with his Gameboy or play computer games instead. This lead to the screen time rule. Now the youngest is flying through books to get his screen time, but he is reading good quality books! We also play board or card cames on Saturday mornings. Sometimes when he has used up all his screen time, he will go to his bedroom and recreate his games with legos or building blocks which increases his imagination and logical skills. There are lots of different things that can be done besides watching a screen. But, we as parents, need to model good behavior by not plopping down in front of the TV the moment we get home, either.

Appropriate age group(s):
toddlers and up
